Choosing sunglasses
Recently sunglasses have become an essential accessory for almost all of us. We do not use sunglasses only for a summer season, on the beach or mountains but now they are more commonly used as a fashion accessory. Now fashion sunglasses are not only a privilege of film stars, athletes and other celebrities but they have become a component of image for ordinary people. Nowadays sunglasses generate the image but their major role should remain to be a protection of our eyes against harmful ultra-violet radiation.
As far as sunglasses are concerned, aesthetic design has to be in harmony with high functionality. Good sunglasses works as a protection against harmful solar radiation and as an aesthetic accessory.
UV filter and sunglasses
In the first case sunglasses should have sufficient UV filter that absorbs solar radiation. You should remember that sunglasses not only need to have UV filter to be of a high quality but they should meet also other very important criteria. Very important criterion is for example the quality of eyeglass lenses. Eyeglass lens cannot be made just of compressed plastic foils, materials used to make eyeglass lenses should not irritate the skin and they should be modifiable and adjustable to the face.
The intensity of the eyeglass lens color also plays an important role so it is necessary to consider where and what for you need sunglasses. The results of wearing low-quality sunglasses are the same health problems as in the case of wearing wrong prescription eyeglasses. Due to the solar radiation the pupil dilates and if sunglasses do not have UV filter then the radiation enters the eye easily and can cause cataracts of the lens and other irreversible changes.
The most commonly used UV filters are labeled by number 3 or 2. Filters 0 and 1 are used only for image sunglasses and they do not protect the eye sufficiently. Sunglasses with filter number 4 are the most protective and are made for sea or mountain conditions. They are not suitable for driving because they decrease the color contrast. The grade of filter determines the amount of light absorption which means the higher grade of filter the lower rate of dazzling.
Eyeglass lenses in sunglasses
Sunglasses have also other functional qualities. Polarizing lenses absorb reflected light and they are suitable for drivers. Brown tint of glass increases contrast perception. Yellow and orange lenses are suitable for rainy and foggy weather whereas sage green lenses are appropriate to sea conditions. It is ideal when sun glasses have anti-reflex layer on the back surface of glass.
