Eyeglasses for kids and children

kids eyeglasses and eyeglass frames and lenses for childrenMainly in the cases of younger kids, eyeglasses are still mostly a visual aid to improve their vision. The most important thing as far as they are concerned is that when they put them on they can see better and feel comfortable. It is often more difficult to choose eyeglasses for kids than it is for an adult and thus you should devote enough time to the choice itself. It applies for the choice of frame and also the choice of kids eyeglass lenses even more so in the cases involving more complicated diopters.

Kids, who are younger than 6-8 years, are usually very energetic and active and as a consequence you may find yourself visiting optical store more often than you would like to. It is not possible to prevent it as there are no eyeglasses for kids which would be “indestructible”. However, by choosing appropriate option you can at least partially eliminate the risk of breaking and of course achieve that your beloved child will wear kids eyeglasses with joy and will look after them with more attention. Therefore when choosing eyeglasses for kids you should be very patient, devote enough attention and do not always buy the cheapest option with the justification that your child will break it sooner rather than later because in the end it could cost you more than if you paid higher price only once.

Kids eyeglass frames

When choosing eyeglass frames for kids the most important factor taken into consideration should be that kids eyeglasses fit on face correctly from the anatomic point of view because mainly in the cases of younger kid it is very difficult to find ideal frame due to anatomic characteristics of their face – for example very small and flat bridge of nose in which case plastic frames are not appropriate and metal frames with adjustable saddles are more ideal. The emphasis should be also put on the weight of eyeglass frames as they should be as light as possible that they are not too tight and do not limit a kid – in other words they should be comfortable.

Materials of children's eyeglass frames

Kids eyeglass frames are made either from plastic or various metal alloys. Kids wear plastic frames very rarely because they are not as adjustable, also they are more massive and often less comfortable. However, they are more appropriate for higher diopters. If you opt for metal material, titan is the most suitable because it is anti-allergic and most importantly it is firm thus it should withstand more than any other commonly used metals. A slight disadvantage of titanium eyeglass frames is that it is more expensive. However, in the end you may gain as the time goes by as you will not need to buy eyeglasses for your kid couple of times a year because they got broken.

Design of children's eyeglass frames

Finally we must not forget about the design of the eyeglass frame itself which however should not be the first priority when choosing kids eyeglasses. Of course as a child grows up he or she will become pickier and will focus on the design of eyeglasses. Nowadays, it is not a problem to choose nice and interesting eyeglasses even for kids. You should be careful that you do not choose kids eyeglass frames which have sharp rims or any stylish, very complicated extravagances that could harm your kid. Simple and plain models are definitely more appropriate. The color depends only on one's taste.

Kids eyeglass lenses

As far as the choice of eyeglass lenses is concerned you can choose either plastic or glass eyeglass lenses. In the cases of kids we definitely recommend plastic eyeglass lenses because they do not shatter in case of a blow, shock or any other mechanical damage and it is very difficult to break them. This will provide a complete safety for your kid and his environment. It is advisable to choose lenses which are hardened against scratching that you do not need to change them every month because it can be quite a real situation in case you have more active children and thus it would be more expensive.

If your kid already attends school or if he spends too much time on his computer, works under artificial light, then we recommend also an antireflex layer which eliminates reflections from the lenses themselves and thus it prevents any restrictions of the vision.

If a kid has higher diopters it is advisable to use thinner material and then kids eyeglasses do not seem to be as thick and look good from the aesthetic point of view.

You should always talk to the expert in the field of eye optics before choosing kids eyeglasses and he will advise you and recommend what would be the most suitable option for your child based for example on the strength of diopters, PD and other parameters.
