Lens cleaners and eyeglass lenses

There is no doubt that a surface treatment of plastic eyeglass lenses has significantly contributed to improving of their quality and aesthetic design. There also some doubts occured, that such modified lenses directly attract dirt and get dirty very quickly.

Organic lenses that almost completely replace mineral lenses have a range of advantages. They are much lighter, more durable, easier to scapple and it is also easier to put them into drilled eyeglasses without any problems. But they are softer and their use would be hardly feasible without quality surface treatment.

Tap water or various lens cleaners are used to clean a surface of eyeglass glasses. Especially, various wet cleaning wipes are not suitable for cleaning. After their use a surface remains - especially of plastic lenses - permanently hazy and lenses become unusable.

On a surface of plastic eyeglass lenses, there often obvious damage can be seen and even complete separation of surface treatments. The reason can be a manufacture defect, the effect of aggressive sweat or improper cleaning of lenses themselves.

Cracks on a surface of plastic eyeglass lenses are often the result of cleaning by very warm water. Organic material has a distinctly higher temperature coefficient. Surface layers are not able to withstand a rapid scooping of the volume of organic material and thereby causing a formation of numerous and deep surface cracks. When drying a surface of eyeglass lenses with microfiber cloth, the edges of cracks get rounded and become clearer.

A possible cause of a complaint of a wearer of a new correction of worsen vision can be a ripple of a surface of a spectacle lens when intact lens surface. Ripple significantly affects image quality. A probable reason is polymerization - creation of large molecules or chains of molecules.

New surface treatments should provide holding of a clean surface of corrective lenses more easier. They prevent depositing of impurities due to an extremely smooth and repulsive surface.

Manufacturers of eyeglass lenses recommend colder water for cleaning, but it is not suitable for smeariness. Conversely, warm water threaten lenses with thermal effect. Liquid lens cleaners on alcohol base in conjunction with surfactants are popular. So a larger amount of alcohol can have a negative effect on a surface of spectacle lenses in certain cases. For example, in a case of polycarbonate lenses we should avoid alcohol and acetone - acceptable are only cleaners with water and surfactants. Although they are not so effective, they do not damage the edges of lenses.

We must also be careful when using wet paper wipes. Various additives and hard wood particles contained in them can cause damage of lenses. These wipes can sometimes leave scoring on a surface of eyeglass lenses. The use of microfiber cloths should be troublefree according to glass manufacturers. Static charge originated on a surface when a dry use recedes within a few minutes. The cheapest clothes are not fully reliable and a dry cleaning can also lead to chafage.

Fat, derived from skin and eyelashes, also contributes to creation of complications on a surface of corrective lenses. Smeariness occures mainly at the edges of frames and is transmitted to the center of lenses during cleaning.

The only reliable help is cleaning in ultrasound cleanerd and cleaners disolving smeariness.

Optimal lens cleaner probably has not been invented yet. If we are careful when cleaning and use a really good cleaners, proper water temperature, preparations for degreasing, we do not have to be afraid of glass damaging.
